Session 6, 9:30am-10:30am
A program to reduce customer complaints not only includes methods to improve water quality at the source of supply but also includes routine maintenance procedures, such as distribution system flushing. Precipitated iron and manganese, as well as other products of corrosion accumulate in water mains over time, particularly in dead end mains. Periods of high demand, such as during a fire, will re-suspend these deposits and carry them to the customer taps. The result may be a series of complaints about discolored water and stained laundry. Periodic flushing of the distribution system can help to remove these deposits. This presentation will cover the set-up and modeling of a unidirectional flushing plan using a water distribution model.
